Dallas ISD high school students interested in automotive careers will gain hands-on experience alongside industry professionals through a new partnership with Dallas Area Rapid Transit.
Dallas ISD and DART announce the High School Student Bus Maintenance Externship Program, a first-of-its-kind initiative connecting students in the district’s Automotive Technician Program of Study with bus maintenance professionals.
“Our students grow the most when they’re in the real world solving real problems,” said Oswaldo Alvarenga, Dallas ISD Deputy Chief of Strategic Initiatives. “For us, partnering with DART is a meaningful way to support the next generation of skilled technicians while creating immediate, hands-on impact for our students in high-demand career pathways.”
Throughout the semester, participating students will receive supervised training in areas such as multipoint vehicle inspections, engine fundamentals, and interior climate-system maintenance. By working alongside DART professionals, students will build technical knowledge, workplace experience and leadership skills that can help prepare them for high-demand careers.
“DART recognizes just how important it is to support education in the region, and to cultivate the next generation of diesel maintenance mechanics. Our expansive fleet of vehicles and professional mechanics are available for Dallas ISD students to expand their experience,” said Trenise Winters, DART Chief Operations Officer.
The partnership is designed to expand career opportunities for Dallas ISD students while helping address the current shortage of diesel maintenance mechanics.
