Dallas, Texas –
The Dallas County Democratic Party today announced the launch of its Fair Maps Fund, a new initiative to combat gerrymandering during the Texas Legislative Special Session and ensure fair and equal representation for all Texans. The fund will support intensified communications, organizing, and mobilization efforts to combat the Republican attack on fair representation for communities of color and working families.

Texas’s demographic landscape is rapidly changing. According to the 2020 Census, people of color accounted for 95% of the state’s population growth over the last decade. For the first time, Black and Brown Texans make up over half of the state’s population, reflecting a state that is now majority people of color. Despite this, only about one in four congressional districts are made up of a majority of Black or Brown voters.
The launch of the Fair Maps Fund is a direct response to President Trump’s stated demand for the creation of five additional Republican congressional seats from Texas. This directive has prompted Governor Greg Abbott to convene a special legislative session, specifically targeting the voting power of communities of color. Proposed maps will limit representation of Black, Brown, and working class Texans by lumping Dallas County voters with those in distant areas and concentrating communities of color into single districts, thereby further limiting their voice.

STATEMENT FROM DALLAS COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIR KARDAL COLEMAN:

“Here are the facts: Texas is getting younger, more diverse, and more progressive, and there is nothing the Republicans can do about it. They know their time is up, so they’re desperately clinging to power the only way they know how: cheating.

For the past seven days, we have done everything in our power to sound the alarm that Texas Republicans are waging an all-out war on our democracy. We have held press conferences, called voters, sent texts, held a public protest, and just last night, packed the Texas House Redistricting Committee’s public hearing in Arlington to demand fair representation and to call out the GOP’s Jim Crow-era tactics.

We have done everything we can with the resources we have, but this crucial fight for our most basic civil rights demands more. The Fair Maps Fund will allow us to scale up the communications, organizing, and mobilization necessary to lift up Texans’ voices against this unprecedented power grab. Trump has made one thing clear: Texas is the test lab. If Republicans succeed here, no state is safe. This isn’t a fight for lines on a map, it is a fight for our vote, our voice, and our seat at the table.”
